How To Keep Your Business Open
It’s the question we’ve all been asking, “How do I keep my business open during difficult times” And we get it. Right now, everything feels uncertain. But your business still needs to make money, so closing your doors and riding out the storm is probably not an option.
We’ve got good news is, though. You are still in control. You can still keep your business open, even during a global pandemic. The only thing is, “open,” might look a little different than you might think. And that’s okay.
Here are our four tips to keep your business open during these times.
1. Follow CDC Guidelines
Yes, this feels obvious. But you’d be shocked at how many businesses are totally disregarding the CDC. And it’s hurting them.
Follow the CDC guidelines for your region. If that means wearing a mask, wear a mask. If you need to socially distance, do that. The rules are there for a reason and if you fail to comply, it will more than likely result in your business closing its doors.
Here’s the thing — nobody is having fun with masks and social distancing. But it’s the right thing to do to keep people safe. And it’s also the right thing to do for your business.
The silver lining? If you’re following the rules, you can rest easy knowing you did the right thing for yourself, your employees, your customers, and your business.

2. Look for New Rules
Not everything is bad. In fact — there have been several mandates that might actually work to your business’ advantage. Many places have made new accommodations to keep businesses afloat. The new rules might actually help your business thrive in these uncertain times. Here are a few new rules that might work for you …
- Lower Capacity — Many places are allowing businesses to be open at a lower capacity. If this rule applies to you, you might be discouraged. Don’t be. This allows your business to use exclusivity to your advantage. If you use your marketing the right way, more people will want to come to your business since only a few can get in the doors at a time. This can be especially helpful for sales.
- Alcohol Sales — Before the pandemic, most alcoholic beverages had to be consumed in restaurants and could not be taken. But since the pandemic started, several places have made temporary provisions to allow restaurants to take alcohol to go. If this rule applies to you and you get creative, you can create new products and let your customers enjoy their favorite cocktail from your restaurant at home!
- Stay at Home Orders — If your city is under a stay-at-home order, this is an opportunity for your business to dabble in delivery. Regardless of what you sell, consider bringing your product to your customer in a safe way. Plus — most people will pay extra for delivery so you can make a great profit.

3. Move Online
It feels like the whole world is moving online right now. And the same can be true for your business. Regardless of what sort of business you run, this can work for you.
- Product-Based – E-commerce shops are a great option for product-based businesses. If this is you, consider using a service like Shopify to take your products online.
- Service-Based – Social media and video chat are an awesome option for service-based businesses. Connect with your audience online if you can’t in person.
- Events-Based – Zoom is the new convention center. Take your event online and use technology to add features that you might not be able to offer otherwise like chat, breakout rooms, and more!

4. Be Flexible
The last key to keeping your business open is to stay flexible. Things are going to change and you might have to pivot on a moment’s notice. And girl, that’s okay. Do your best to adapt, be willing to change, and make new plans. Then, your business will stay afloat.
